El día 13 de diciembre de 2010 se murió Enrique Morente Cotelo, un cantaor español considerado como uno de los máximos responsables de la renovación del cante, así como el mejor adaptador al flamenco de poemas de poetas españoles. Murió después de llevar varios días en coma por un infarto cerebral. Nació el 25 de diciembre de 1942 en plena posguerra en el barrio del Albaicín de Granada. Como esos tiempos eran muy duros, creció en una familia bastante pobre. A Morente siempre le fascinó el flamenco, y empezó a aprender las bases del cante jondo con Aurelios Sellés, un cantaor de Cádiz. Su ansia de conocimiento y aprendizaje le llevó a trasladarse con 15 años a Madrid, donde contactó con un grupo de jóvenes aficionados al flamenco y se dedicó de lleno a la música.
Un día, la bailaora Mariemma lo oyó cantar y le preguntó si no tenía ganas de acompañarla a Nueva York. Éste fue el primer viaje al extranjero de Morente, durante cual cantó en el Pabellón español de la Feria Mundial de Nueva York de 1964 y en la embajada española en Washington. Justo después tuvo lugar su primera aparición en un festival flamenco en el teatro de los Alcázares de los Reyes Cristianos en Córdoba.
Después de publicar su primer disco ‘Cante Flamenco’ en el año 1967, que recibió una Mención Especial de la Cátedra de Flamencología en 1968, grabó numerosos discos en lo cuales siempre colaboraba con artistas de flamenco muy famosos. Ya desde su primer disco tenía una clara visión renovadora del flamenco. En los últimos años, su afán renovador le llevó a desarrollar proyectos musicales aún más ambiciosos. Ha fusionado con músicos de todo tipo de músicas. Ha trabajado con artistas como Leonard Cohen, Lagartija Nick, Sonic Youth, Pat Metheny, Los Planetas o Amaral y Sr. Chinarro.
En 1994, Morente fue el primer cantaor de flamenco que recibió el Premio Nacional de Música otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura de España. Desde entonces, sus esfuerzos por renovar y modernizar el flamenco, declarado recientemente patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco, le llevaron a grabar unos 20 discos y trabajar con músicos de todas las tendencias. Actualmente preparaba un álbum titulado “El barbero de Picasso”, en homenaje al pintor malagueño.
Morente estaba casado con la bailaora de flamenco Aurora Carbonell, con la que tiene tres hijas. Una de ellas, Estrella Morente, es otra de las grandes figuras del cante flamenco en España.

Enrique Morente Cotelo was a Spanish flamenco singer who is considered one of the most important figures in renovating the cante (the flamenco singing) and also considered the best adapter of poetries from Spanish poets to the flamenco. He died on 13 December 2010 after several days in coma caused by a brain attack.He was born 25 December 1942 in the postwar period in the district Albaicin in Granada. As these times were very hard, he grew up in a quite poor family. Morente had always been fascinated by the flamenco, and he started to learn the basis of Cante Jondo from Aurelios Selles, a singer from Cadiz. Due to his striving for knowledge and learning he moved to Madrid by the age of 15, where he got to know a group of young people keen on flamenco and he commited himself to the music.
One day, the flamenco dancer Mariemma heard him singing and he asked him if he didn’t want to accompany her to New York. This was Morente’s first journey to a foreign country. In New York he sang in the Spanish pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and in the Spanish Embassy in Washington. Shortly after he had his first entrance at a flamenco festival in the theatre of the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs in Cordoba.
After publishing his first record “Cante Flamenco” in 1967, which received a special mention award from the Cátedra de Flamencología in 1968, he recorded numerous Lps in which he always colaborated with famous flamenco artists. Yet since his first record he had a clear vision of modernizing flamenco. During the last years thanks to his eagerness he developed music projects that were even more ambitious. He cooperated with musicians of all types of music. He worked with artists like Leonard Cohen, Lagartija Nick, Sonic Youth, Pat Metheny, Los Planetas o Amaral y Sr. Chinarro.
In 1994, Morente was the first flamenco singer receiving the Music National Award awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Since then, his efforts to modernize the flameno, which was recently declared Unesco World Heritage, made him to record about 20 Lps and to work with musicians of all types of music. Currently he was working on an album called “El barbero de Picasso” (“Picasso’s barber”), in honor of the painter from Malaga.
Morente was married to the flamenco dancer Aurora Carbonell with whom he has three children. One of them is Estrella Morente, another of Spain’s great flamenco singers. |
