| Los elementos de la tierra son protagonistas en el gran festival granadino, en la noche del solsticio de verano. Agua y fuego son los ingredientes básicos de la fiesta, porque estaban unidos en los antiguos rituales del solsticio de verano. Por eso celebran la noche de San Juan siempre cerca de un río, lago o del mar y con hogueras grandes. En la provincia y en la ciudad de Granada no solos celebran la llegada del verano con hogueras pero también con barbacoas. Los pueblos de la provincia suelen añadir varias actividades y actuaciones a los elementos básicos. Mucha gente dice que la noche de San Juan es la más mágica del año. La verdad es que es la noche más corta del año es el 21 de junio. Por eso en Granada las celebraciones empiezan unos días antes de la noche mágica, pero terminan de la misma manera como en los otros pueblos el 23 de junio. Con una verbena y la tradicional barbacoa cerca del río Genil se saluda al verano en la noche de su llegada. También la Escuela Delengua participa en esta tradición cada año, y nunca falta cuando encienden las hogueras. La llegada del verano significa también que los días empiezan a ser más cortos. Las llamas de las hogueras apoyan al sol que desde este día se pone más y más débil.
La noche de San Juan, o sea el solsticio de verano, se suele celebrar en muchos países del mundo. Aparte de España también hay celebraciones en Portugal (Fogueiras de São João), Noruega (Jonsok), Dinamarca (Sankthans), Suecia (Midsommar), Finlandia (Juhannus) y Reino Unido (Midsummer). En Sudamérica, por ejemplo Brasil tiene las Fiestas Juninas, y en Venezuela se celebra la noche de San Juan como en España. The elements of the land play the leading roles in the great festival on the night of the summer solstice in Granada. Water and fire are the basic ingredients of the festival because they used to be united at the old rituals of the summer solstice. Because of this they always celebrate the night of San Juan near a river, lake or the sea and with big bonfires. In the province and city of Granada they not only celebrate the arrival of summer with bonfires but also with barbecues . The towns in the province usually add various activities and performances to the basic elements. Many people say that the night of San Juan is the most magical of the year. In fact it is the shortest night of the year on the 21st June. This is why in Granada the celebrations start some days before the magical night but they finish in the same way as in the other towns on the 23rd June. With a night festival and a traditional barbecue near to the Genil river, they greet the summer on the night of its arrival. The calls for bonfires support the sun that from this day on will become weaker and weaker.
