A week in the life of a Delengua Spanish course student.

Studying Spanish in Granada, Spain is a hugely rewarding experience; it is both very practical and extremely fun. Though no two weeks are quite the same, and our activities programme is very diverse here’s an idea o a Spanish course student at Escuela Delengua week might look like, studying on our intensive course:

Monday: Arrival at the Delengua, set in a modern, renovated building in the beautiful Albaicín. Classes running each day from 10:00-13:30. On your first day you meet your teachers and classmates, have a tour round the school and an assessment of your level at 9:00. Monday is always perfectly rounded off by a tapas night, a Delengua tradition. Arguably the best way to learn your way around Granada!

Tuesday:  After morning class learning grammar and having conversation practice, you explore the city, there’s so much to see close to the school, not least the second largest Cathedral in Spain. The evening offers you a chance to experience the famous flamenco dancing that is iconic to Andalucía, on one of the schools’ regular activities.

Wednesday:  After some more interactive classes you go on the schools’ afternoon trip to Los Cahorros in Monachil. There you find yourself in the midst of nature with some impressive waterfall trails to explore.  In the evening you go for tapas with your classmates and try out the Spanish gastronomy once again!

Thursday: The day has arrived; you have signed up to visit the famous Alhambra just after class. After a quick lunch you meet up with the rest of the group and take a guided tour through the Alhambra. Learning even more Spanish as you go! You’re tired so you have a night in, watching a Spanish DVD you have borrowed from our school library.

Friday:  The weekend has arrived and you have learned a lot of new grammar and vocabulary, and it’s time to let off some steam. The school meets up for Master Chef, cooking Spanish tortilla together. This leads on to sampling some of Granada’s nightlife!

Saturday: Trip to the Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada. You’ve signed up to explore the white villages of the Sierra Nevada. You explore the markets and enjoy some breathtaking views in every direction! You can’t wait to see what next week brings.

How to make the most of your short-term Spanish course in Granada, Spain

When taking a short term Spanish course in Spain, be it for a week, a month, or more, it is important to take advantage of every opportunity you get to explore the region, have fun, and improve your Spanish. At our Spanish language school, Escuela Delengua, we try to encourage students on our Spanish courses to get involved and see everything Granada has to offer! Here are some tips to make the most out of your short-term stay in Granada.

Make the most out of the activities. At our language school we offer an extremely varied activities programme, ranging from our traditional Monday tapas nights, to visits to the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada and the tropical coast, to exploring more of Granada’s historical heritage in its monasteries and cathedral, to one of the favourite activities amongst our students; the homemade paella night! The diversity of the activities ensures that you will never have a dull day in Granada, and you can experience the best it has to offer.

Speak as much Spanish as possible. This is essential, whatever your Spanish level, to allow you to improve quickly. The native Spanish teachers make both classes and visits interactive, and you can pick their brains about their local knowledge. With group size on our intensive courses ranging from 2 to a maximum of 8 students, it allows everyone a chance to express themselves and learn from each other. We also offer accommodation with Spanish families for those who really want to immerse themselves in the Spanish language, (and the Spanish home cooking makes it even better!)

Make the most of films, books and magazines. We value the importance helping you improve your understanding of both Spanish language and culture in a variety of ways. That’s why we have a library in our school with a wide range of books and DVDs that are free to borrow during your stay! We stock many of the classics, including those of Federico Garcia Lorca, whose summer house is visited by our school on a regular basis!

Bring a camera. Delengua is situated in the beautiful Albayzín area, in the center of Granada. Not only does this mean you can enjoy the sights and smells of artisan shops and teterías (tea shops) but it means you are a stone’s throw away from the Alhambra and the Mirador San Nicholas. It’s recommended you bring your camera to capture the breathtaking views Granada provides!

Legal Spanish with our Spanish language school in Granada, Spain

At our Spanish language school in Granada, we offer many specific courses (in addition to core Spanish classes) to help you target your study of the language towards a particular goal. One such course is Legal Spanish, a worthwhile endeavor for law students or anybody working in the field of law, for example as a judge, lawyer or legal secretary.

The Legal Spanish course generally begins with an introduction to Law in order to familiarize students with basic Spanish legal terminology. Through two daily classes they are taken through legal vocabulary, legal documents and exemplar cases to build a comprehensive foundation for their studies. Our courses can also be modified to suit the needs of our students: if you need to know how to draft a legal document, we can help you; if you’re interested in learning more about criminal law, we can tailor your classes to this end; if you have a passion for international law, we have the drive to help you excel! Topics also include commercial, environmental and procedural law, among others. You can find a complete list on our website.

Whilst studying the Legal Spanish course, students also take part in at least one visit to a courtroom, lawyer’s office or another organization linked to the field of law. This allows for full immersion into the legal sphere and has proven to be an interesting and enriching experience in the past, showing students what they may be able to achieve in the future.

We asked Antonia (a former student of our Spanish language school) what she thought of the Legal Spanish course. This is what she had to say:

“The courses were brilliant, I’m very grateful to the school. Whilst studying the Legal Spanish course I was able to choose the topics which I find interesting. I wanted to learn law terminology and how to expresses myself in a more formal manner. We started with an introduction to basic Spanish legal vocabulary. During the course I studied parts of criminal law, civil law (family law, inheritance law, contracts etc) and we examined small cases, with definitions and discussions. It was the perfect way to understand the correct meaning and usage of legal terminology. I now have a good foundation of legal Spanish and I was very happy with the way in which the teachers taught the material.”
