Las obras del escritor inglés, Gerald Brenan estuvieron inspiradas por Granada. Gerald escribió sobre su vida y sus experiencias en la provincia de Granada y es conocido por su servicio a la literatura española. Nació en Malta en 1894, pero pasó su infancia en Inglaterra, donde fue a un colegio inglés muy prestigioso. Sin embargo siempre quería embarcar en nuevas aventuras, a la edad de 25 ya había vivido en Sur África e India y durante la I Guerra Mundial combatió en Francía. Después buscó un lugar, donde continuar su formación y un sitio donde fuese posible vivir y escribir con poco dinero. Entonces decidió viajar a España, en 1919 llegó al Norte de la península con planes de viajar al sur. Comenzó en Galicia, donde pasó poco tiempo antes de viajar hasta Madrid, pasando por distintos pueblos hasta llegar a la provincia de Granada. El 13 de enero de 1920 se instaló en el pueblo de Yegen, en la Alpujarra granadina. Había encontrado un lugar idílico, donde poder seguir estudiando mientras escribía sobre sus experiencias, e inspirado por la belleza natural de Sierra Nevada. Vivió en España durante los años 20 y tuvo una hija con su amada, una española llamada Juliana Martín Peregrina. Un poco después volvió a Inglaterra, donde se casó con una poetisa americana. Durante la Guerra Civil Española se quedó en Inglaterra pero siempre con ganas de volver a vivir en la península. En 1953, a pesar de sus opiniones críticas frente al Gobierno de Franco, volvió a instalarse en España en el pequeño pueblo malagueño de Alhaurín el Grande.

Su mejor obra fue “South from Granada”: Al Sur de Granada, obra que trata sobre su viaje del norte al sur de España y sobre su vida en Yegen. En ella relata la hospitalidad y amabilidad de la gente, las cosechas, los amaneceres, la pobreza y la belleza de España. Siempre dijo: ¡no he visto nunca un país más bonito que España!”. Murió el 19 enero 1987 en España, en Alhaurín el Grande.

The works of the English writer, Gerald Brenan were inspired by Granada. Gerald wrote about his life and his experiences in the province of Granada and he is known for his services to Spanish literature. He was born in Malta in 1894 but he spent his childhood in England, where he went to a very prestigious English school. However he always wanted to embark on new adventures, at the age of 25, he had already lived in South Africa and India and then during World War 1 he fought in France. Afterwards he looked for a place to continue his training and a place where he could live and write with a little money. He then decided to travel to Spain, in 1919 he arrived in the North of the peninsula with plans to travel to the south. He started in Galicia, where he spent a little time before travelling to Madrid, passing through different towns until he arrived in the province of Granada. On the 13th January in 1920 he moved to the town of Yegen, in Alpujarra of Granada. He found an ideal place where he could continue studying while he wrote about his experiences being inspired by the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada. He lived in Spain during the 20’s and he had a daughter with his lover, a Spanish lady called Juliana Martín Peregrina. After some time he returned to England where he married an American poet. During the Spanish Civil War he stayed in England but always looking forward to returning to live in Spain. In 1953, despite his critical views towards the government of Franco, he returned to live in Spain in the small town near Malaga of Alhaurín el Grande.

His best work was “South from Granada”, about his trip from the north to the south of Spain and about his life in Yegen. In it he relates to the hospitality and friendliness of the people, the harvests, dawn, poverty and the beauty of Spain. He always said: “I have never seen a country more beautiful the Spain!” He died on the 19th January 1987 in Spain, in Alpujarra.
