What can you do in Granada during the winter? Come and see what Escuela Delengua can offer!

Escuela Delengua is situated right in the centre of Granada, a city which not only offers sun and beached in the summer but has a wealth of activities to offer in the winter. Just 40 kilometres from Granada can be found the awe-inspiring mountain range of the Sierra Nevada. Boasting the Iberian Peninsula’s highest point, Mulhac’en at 3480m, the Sierra Nevada can be seen from the very centre of Granada. From the miradores that are dotted around the city, such as the Mirador San Nicolás located only 10 minutes from Escuela Delengua, to just walking through this historic city, you will catch ample glimpses of the snow-covered mountains.

The Sierra Nevada

If you are thinking of doing an intensive Spanish course with us here at Escuela Delengua, it may surprise you to hear that the Sierra offers skiing so close to a city known for sun and tapas. In reality Granada offers everything. City life nestled between sea and skiing, what more could you ask for? Every weekend, the ski stations of the Sierra welcome more than seven thousand people who come to Granada wishing to enjoy the snow, whether it be skiing, tobogganing or dog sledding, the sierra offers some winter fun for the whole family. But don’t assume it’s all about winter fun. The skiing season in the Sierra Nevada lasts from November to May and this year the slopes close on the 3rd of May so you could very easily be enjoying winter fun in the morning and then be sunbathing on the tranquil beaches of the Costa Tropical in the afternoon.

Of course skiing is not all the city has to offer. Escuela Delengua still offers many exciting avtivities during the winter months. Not only does the school offer trips for students up to the Sierra Nevada for very reasonable prices but our usual range of activites are still available, such as tapas nights, walks around the beautiful Albayzín in winter and cultural visits to the Alhambra during the winter. If you thought this historic building was beautiful in the summer then you should see it in the winter. The stunning colours of the trees and plants around the monument offset the colour of the acient stone perfectly and offer a fantastic sight for anyone lucky enough to see it. As well as this the Alhambra offers beautidul views over Granada and what could be more breathtaking than a view over over the already stunning city covered in a blanket of snow. If you thought Spanish was perfect suring the summer why not come for a visit in the winter? Under its sheet of snow the Sierra Nevada turns Granada into a completely different place, you almost wont believe you are in Spain!

Escuela Delengua offers many extracurricular activities to its students and in the winter the Sierra Nevada is one of the student’ favourite destinations. How we celebrate Christmas at Escuela Delengua

The year is drawing to a close and Christmas is nearly upon us. Here in Granada, the festive season really begins around the 5th-8th November when there is a ‘puente’ between the ‘día de la constitución’ and ‘día de la inmaculada concepción’, both very important celebrations in Spain and a time when everyone gets a day off. This is when shops start really getting into the Christmas Spirit, when lights start getting turned on and when giant Christmas treet start getting put up around the city.

Decorations

The city of Granada gets crammed to the rafters with lights during the Christmas season. Lights are strung from one side of the street to another, a giant Christmas tree is erected in Plaza Bib-Rambla and Christmas markets start to open in Plaza Bib-Rambla and Puerta Real. As well as this, you will notice the nativity scenes that Spaniards call ‘Belenes’ appearing around the city. Here at Escuela Delengua we offer a tour of all the beautiful ‘Belenes’ that Granada has to offer as one of our activities (take a look at our activities page to see what´s on offer this week). This gives our students the chance to experience one of the authentic traditions that Spain has to offer.

Gordo de Navidad

After all the decorations have gone up, the 22nd of December is the day when it really begins to feel like Christmas in Spain. This is the day of the Christmas lottery, one of the biggest lottery draws in the world. Altogether several millions of euros are raffled in this national lottery that is a massive tradition throughout Spain. The complete draw is broadcast throughout the whole day making it a massive event that really signals the start of Christmas for Spaniards.

The Three Wise Men arrive the night of the 5th of January

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is a very intimate affair in Spain with families coming together to eat a dinner usually consisting of plates of seafood or poultry (although of course each region has its own typical meals). The desserts are usually turrones (something every visitor to Spain should try at least once!) or marzipan. At midnight, it is a Catholic tradition to attend the Misa del Gallo , or midnight mass in English, when all the family will go and celebrate the birth of Christ together and bring in Christmas as a family. Christmas eve and Christmas day are slightly smaller affairs in Spain than in other countries in the world because Santa Claus is not a tradition in Spain and has only become known through English and American influences. Spanish childresn traditionally wait for gifts from the Three Wise Men on the night of the 5th of January.

Los Reyes Magos

Children in Spain send a letter to the Three Wise Men indicating the gifts they want for Christmas as well as the reasons for which they think they deserve the presents. Everyone will then go and watch the arrival of the Three Wise Men on the 5th January who arrive in a procession throwing sweets to the children. Here in Granada, very close to Escuela Delengua, there is a great procession through the city of the afternoon of the 5th of January. There are three men on horses representing the Three Wise Men, each one accompanied by an entourage of more than 90 people.

Merry Christmas!

That night, Spanish children leave their shoes for the Three Wise Men to fill with gifts or, if they have misbehaved, a carbón dulce, a sweet that looks like coal. The next mornign the children awake to their presents and the adults also exchange presents. The 6th of January is a bank holiday throughout Spain, a day on which the family can be together and the children can play with their toys.

Now you know a little more about how we here at Escuela Delengua celebrate Christmas are you tempted to sutdy an intensive Spanish course here with us during Christmas time? Or fancy sharnig how you celebrate Christmas in our comments box? MERRY CHRISTMAS!

In terms of the classes, you can expect to be in a group that will have a maximum of 8 people in it. This ensures that each student gets the amount of individual attention that is needed to be able to learn Spanish in the most effective way possible. Make use of Delengua's library and expand your knowledge of Spanish literature

Delengua’s library is filled with great Spanish books

But, what can you expect from the content of the class? Well remove from your heads any concept of school language lessons with verb tables and memorisation. Of course there will be verb learning but in a much more fun and interactive way. At Delengua you can expect a variety of activities to take place during just one class. Our teachers use music, films and games to engage a class and ensure everyone is taking part, learning and, most importantly, speaking. In order to get the best out of students, we offer a grammar class from 10 till 11.30 and then an opportunity to practice that grammar in a speaking class from 12 till 1.30. From then onwards you are free to take part in activities with the school or explore Granada. Just make sure you’re speaking Spanish!
