“El sueño del celta”, la nueva novela de Mario Vargas Llosa/”The Dream of the Celt”, the latest novel by Mario Vargas Llosa

El día 3 de noviembre se publicó la nueva novela del escritor peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, a quien se le otorgó este año el premio Nobel de Literatura. Vargas Llosa trabajó más de dos años en esta novela titulada “El sueño del celta”, reconstruyendo la vida del protagonista, un defensor de los derechos humanos.

La novela se basa en un personaje histórico, el nacionalista irlandés Roger Casement, cónsul británico en el Congo a principios del siglo XX, cuya vida era muy aventurera y realmente novelesca. El libro empieza en el año 1903 en el Congo, donde Casement denunció el genocidio cuando el país pertenecía al rey belga Leopoldo II. Además dirigió una comisión que investigó abusos contra los indígenas en la región del Putumayo, en la zona fronteriza entre Colombia y Perú. Sin embargo, la suerte de Roger Casement cambió cuando fue acusado de facilitar armas a los nacionalistas irlandeses durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La novela termina en el año 1916 en una cárcel de Londres donde Casement fue condenado a muerte.

El personaje de Roger Casement fascinó desde el principio a Vargas Llosa, y escribir esta novela ha sido una aventura para él, ya que para hacer investigaciones para la novela viajó por el Congo, la Amazonia e Irlanda. Lo que sorprendió al escritor fue que ni en el Congo ni en la Amazonia haya quedado rastro de Casement. En Irlanda quedan apenas unos cuantos recuerdos suyos, que, con su novela, Vargas Llosa trae al presente otra vez.

El peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, que desde 1993 también cuenta con la nacionalidad española, es considerado uno de los novelistas y ensayistas contemporáneos más importantes. Desde que publicó su primer libro, “La ciudad y los perros”, en 1962, ha publicado multitud de novelas, ensayos, obras de teatro y otras obras. Algunas de sus novelas incluso se han llevado a la pantalla. Vargas Llosa, que forma parte de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua y también de la Real Academia Española, ha recibido numerosos premios durante su carrera profesional. Uno de los más importantes es sin duda el Premio Nobel de Literatura que recibió en octubre de 2010 por su cartografía de las estructuras de poder y sus imágenes mordaces de la resistencia del individuo, la rebelión y la derrota.

On 3 November there was published the latest novel by the peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, who has been awarded this year the Nobel Prize in Literature. Vargas Llosa has worked more than two years on this novel titled “The Dream of the Celt”, reconstructing the protagonist’s life, a defender of human rights.

The novel is based on a historical personality, the irish nationalist Roger Casement, the british consul in the Congo at the beginning of the 20th century, whose life was quite adventurous and really worth a novel. The book starts in 1903 in the Congo, where Casement denounced genocide when the country belonged to King Leopold II of Belgium. Furthermore, he lead a commission that investigated abuses of the indigineous population living in the border area of Colombia and Peru. Nevertheless, Casement’s fate changed when he was accused of supplying irish nationalists with arms during World War II. The novel ends in 1916 in a jail in London, where Casement had been sentenced to death.

The personality of Roger Casement had fascinated Vargas Llosa from the beginning, and writing this novel has been like an adventure for him, because for making enquiries for his book he travelled to the Congo, the Amazon Rainforest and Ireland. He was surprised by the fact that neither in the Congo nor en Amazonia there were left traces of Casement. In Ireland there were left some memories of him which Vargas Llosa brings to the present again.

The Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa, who has also the Spanish citizenship since 1993, is considered one of the most important contemporary writers and essayists. After his first novel “The time of the hero” from 1962, he has published a large number of novels, essays, plays and other works. Some of his novels have even been filmed. Vargas Llosa, who forms part of the Peruvian Academy of Language and also of the Royal Spanish Academy, has been awarded numerous prizes during his career. One of the most important ones is without doubt the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in October 2010 for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat.
