El último domingo de septiembre se celebra el festival de San Miguel en el barrio del Albaicín en Granada. Aunque es una fiesta local, es conocida en toda la provincia de Granada y muchos romeros vienen a celebrarla. San Miguel es un santo importante en Granada, porque se le relaciona con la Reconquista y la expulsión de los musulmanes de la ciudad, un evento muy importante en la historia de Granada. Como la Escuela Delengua está situada al pie del Albaicín, sus estudiantes pudieron disfrutar de festival con facilidad. La fiesta empieza por la tarde, cuando los romeros suben a la Ermita del Arcángel San Miguel, San Miguel Alto, que está en una colina del Albaicín. Vienen a caballo y en carreta. La imagen original de San Miguel permanece en la ermita (que fue construida en 1673), pero los romeros sacan otras imágenes, hechas especialmente para una procesión, y las llevan por las calles del barrio. La ermita está en un punto muy alto, en el Cerro del Aceituno, y por eso preside la ciudad entera. Aunque es un festival religioso, la procesión religiosa no es la única actividad del día. Hay un concurso de fútbol, cucañas, verbenas y comida típica en el Cerro de San Miguel, al lado de la ermita, y las calles están llenas de gente. El festival de San Miguel es un día fenomenal, y una manera magnífica de darle la bienvenida al otoño. |
On the last Sunday in September, the festival of Saint Miguel is celebrated in the Albaicín district of Granada. Although it is a local celebration, it is known throughout the whole province of Granada, and many pilgrims come here to celebrate it. Saint Miguel is an important saint for Granada, because people associate him with the Reconquest and the expulsion of the Muslims from the city; an important even in Granada’s history. As Escuela Delengua is situated at the foot of the Albaicín, its students were able to easily enjoy the festival. The fiesta begins in the afternoon, when the pilgrims climb to the Hermitage of the Archangel Saint Miguel, in High San Miguel, which is on one of the hills of the Albaicín. They travel up on horseback or in carts. The original image of Saint Miguel remains in the hermitage, which was built in 1673, but the pilgrims take out other images of the saint, which are made especially to be taken out on processions, and carry them through the streets of the neighbourhood. The hermitage sits on a very high point on the ‘Hill of the Olive Tree’, and because of its situation, looks out over the entire city. Although it is a religious festival, the religious procession is not the only activity that takes place. There is a football competition, competitions to climb up to the top of a greased pole, groups singing popular songs for open air dancing, typical food at ‘San Miguel Hill’, next to the hermitage; and the streets are full of people. The festival of Saint Miguel is a wonderful day and is a great way to welcome autumn to Granada. |
