On the 21st August, Escuela Delengua and its students of Spanish visited the gardens of the Generalife, in the Alhambra, Granada, to see this spectacle put on by the Flamenco Ballet of Andalucia, a fusion of theatre and flamenco. It was an opportunity to listen to Spanish whilst we enjoyed the atmosphere of the show, which united arguably Granada’s most important person, place, and type of dance.

‘Romancero Gitano’ first appeared in July 1928, and is said to be one of Lorca´s most transgressive works. It focuses on the persecution of a gypsy town, and each page is full of movement and emotion (with themes such as love, death, adultery, racism, envy and repression). This was expertly conveyed on stage by the Flamenco Ballet of Andalucia, and it was an unforgettable night.

The production included ten of Lorca’s ballads: amongst them the famous ‘Pena negra’ (‘Black Sadness’), ‘La Reyerta’ (‘The Brawl’), and ‘La monja Gitana’ (‘The Gypsy Nun’). ‘Preciosa y el aire’ (‘Preciosa and the air’), the dance of the Guardía Civil, and the undressing of the nuns also stood out for their emotion and choreography.

The show formed part of Lorca and Granada, a project of the Ministry of Culture, which takes place every year in the city, and which is understandably popular. It mixed live music with incredibly talented ‘cantaores’ and ‘bailaores’ (flamenco singers and dancers), and the end result was a very moving and exciting show.
